What I do:
By using a virtual whiteboard (Figjam), I prepare curated word-based games and reading materials for children who wish to learn how to read and write in English. I offer a variety of activities which kids can choose from, and I customize the content to feature things they are interested in. I also have a reward system to incentivise active participation: kids can earn virtual coins for their work, and buy virtual word-cards to build up a collection! The best part about using Figjam is that I can easily grab pictures from the internet in real time to illustrate anything that comes up during the lesson.I have been tutoring English reading/writing to my niece on Figjam for about a year. I’ve had a lot of fun figuring out what kinds of games she enjoys the most, and which are most effective in promoting her literacy skills. I look forward to using what I learned to provide the best possible lessons for others, while also adapting to their unique tastes and learning style.
Who I am:
I’m a Canadian-French-South African who has lived in all three countries and has been bilingual from a young age. I studied second-language teaching at university and taught English in school in Japan for six years as part of the highly competetive JET Programme. I currently live in Ottawa, Canada.
